In my fantasy dream vacation,I have rented a large Villa somewhere in Europe and I have friends with me. We've gathered around the kitchen after a long day of sightseeing, painting, and writing and now our local Chef has arrived and is creating a local masterpiece. The food is organic straight from the Farms, all he brought with him was his knife. And it begins. We watch him cut and slice and dice. The wine opens and good conversation begins. We sink into another Starry Night at the Villa in Europe.
The thing that is missing, I've noted, in all of these scenarios is that Gadget from QVC that chops and dices and slices. You know the one. The one that goes from house to house when you move, still in the box. Maybe used a couple of times - it does what it says it will do, but so does the knife. I know, I have had a collection of these things and the occasional collection of exercise equipment, but in my dream world those things don't exist.
I love to travel and visit with friends and eat at restaurants and cook because I like to take the time to do it. I'm not trying to get it done fast. I'm not trying to become more efficient or reinvent the wheel, or the knife.. When I travel - time stands still. That's why I do it. I get lost in all of the wonderful traditions, the aromas, the places and the foods of the people of life around us. I don't travel to find things that make it more efficient and speed up life. That's not the point. It’s to get me off the wheel and remind me that I am LIVING a life. That is also why I paint. Life stands still when I paint and everything is simplified - it is now just me and the brush on the canvas (or palette knife). I don't need a lot of complicated things and I don't need to better the wheel or the brush, I think the more advanced we become in technology the more the need to simplify .
The more I look for ways to be part of what connects us, I have found the answer is generally the simplest of things.
